What is a sprinkler system and how does it work?

How do the automatic water spray heads on the ceiling line bring a fire under control? The logic of sprinklers and where they are required.

The fastest response to a fire is the one that starts before anyone notices. A sprinkler system does exactly that: it brings a fire under control automatically by spraying water while it is still small. In this article we explain, in plain language, how a sprinkler works and where it is required.

What is a sprinkler?

A sprinkler is an automatic spray head placed on the ceiling line and connected to a pressurised water line. Each head operates independently; only the heads in the zone where the heat exceeds a certain threshold open. In other words, water is delivered not to the whole building but to the exact point of the fire.

How does it work?

  • The heat-sensitive element in the head (a glass bulb or fusible link) opens when the temperature reaches the threshold.
  • The opened head sprays pressurised water from the fire installation onto the fire.
  • The water suppresses the flame and slows its spread, buying time until the fire brigade arrives.

The heart of the system is the pump set and riser line that feed water at sufficient pressure. That is why a sprinkler works not on its own, but as part of a whole installation including a pump, piping and tank.

Where is a sprinkler required?

Sprinkler systems are widely used in shopping malls, factories, warehouses, hotels and buildings above a certain size. Whether a building requires sprinklers is determined in the project according to factors such as its intended use, area and hazard class.

Installation and testing

Sprinkler pipework is laid in line with the architectural and mechanical project; heads are distributed according to the coverage area. After installation, the lines are pressure-tested and the system is commissioned. Periodic inspection is the guarantee that the system will work when a fire breaks out.

Its relationship with other systems

A sprinkler is not enough on its own; it forms a whole together with fire detection, the fire cabinet and escape routes. Early warning and automatic suppression complement each other.
